How To Become an English Tutor for Koreans in Philippines

imagePhilippines is becoming the center of destination for many Koreans. They come here to do business, to travel, to retire, and to study. If you will look around, you will find many Korean establishments and majority of these are English language center for Koreans. They choose our country to study English because it is affordable, and many Filipino teachers are qualified to teach English as a Second Language. If you are a person who has a desire to teach English, has a good grasp and command of the English language, and want to have an extra income, then you can become a Korean English tutor. There are three ways to become a Korean English tutor: first, you can teach online, second, you can become a private tutor, and third, you can teach formally in a language center or school (in most cases, you will teach one on one or a group in a language center). Let me discuss this one by one.
A. Online tutoring. There are two ways to become an online tutor, you can be a home-based tutor or company-based tutor. Below are the details:

  • It can be per hour if you will work as a part time. It also depends on your qualification.

  • You need to pay for your internet bill if you are home-based. But some companies include it in the salary.

Things needed
  • If you are a home-based tutor you must have the following things: fast internet connection (DSL), IM Messenger like Skype, Fast Computer, Bank Account for salary payment.

  • If you will do a home-based tutoring under a company, make it sure that it is located in Philippines. It will be very easy to communicate with the company in case there will be problems. Also check if the company really exist and if it is registered in DTI.

B. Home tutor. There are two ways to become a home tutor: those who are stay-in tutors and private tutors. Stay-in tutors are teachers who stay together with Korean students for the whole duration of the English program. Private tutors do not stay with Korean students. Private tutors just go their house on the specified teaching schedule. Below are the details:

  • Private tutors receive 100 – 150 pesos per hour, while stay-in tutors have an exact salary, ranging from 8,000 – 10,000 pesos a month.

  • Stay-in tutors have free board and lodging, while those who are not stay-in tutors do not receive anything. (It still depends on the Korean employer if they will be given a fare allowance)
Advantage
  • Stay-in tutors do not worry where will they stay and what to eat. It is like a package deal
  • Private tutors can choose what time they can teach. It can be a whole day; it can be in the morning;it can be in the afternoon;it can be in the evening.
Disadvantages
  • Stay-in tutors are always under surveillance of the Korean headmasterSmile. He / She always check what you are doing; where will you, etc.
Qualifications
  • College graduate or undergraduate.
  • Good command of English.
  • Good in grammar, vocabulary.
  • Knowledgeable of other subjects like science and math. Some Koreans will ask you to teach other subjects aside from English.

  • English books like TOEFL, TOEIC, English books like Grammar in Use by Cambridge, etc. Some Koreans have their own books

C. ESL Teacher in a Korean School or Language Center. This is the last type of job that you can do if you want to become an English tutor to Koreans. Many schools and language centers can be seen in big urban places. If you want a formal teaching or class-based setting, then this is for you. Below are the details:
Fees
  • Most of the school and language centers pay a minimal salary of 10,000. You will receive more if you have TESOL certificate, teaching license, and experience.
Benefits
  • Some schools give benefits like SSS, Philhealth,bonus,13th month pay, and allowances.
Advantage
  • Most Korean schools let you signed a contract. Usually it is a 6 month contract, or a 1 year contract. It means that you will not get worried about your job. You can  have an extra tutor at night.
Disadvantage
  • More pressure from work, like checking of test papers, making exam, doing weekly lesson plans, etc.
Qualifications
  • College graduate,while some language centers accept undergraduate with teaching experience.
