7 Things That You Must Know Before You Teach English in a Korean Language Center

english teacherMy last article about “How to Become An English Tutor For Koreans” received positive feedbacks from the readers. Others came up with suggestions to make a blog only for “Teaching English to Koreans.” At this point of time, I do not have plans to do it. My focus is to write articles that will give information in the areas of business, personal finance, career, and jobs for Filipinos. But I will try to write more articles and have a separate category about that subject.
Let me begin this topic by asking you a question, “Are you planning to teach English in a Korean language school? If yes, please continue reading this article. If not, still read it, but just ignore the information that I am writing.Smile
Korean tutorial center  is a growing business in the Philippines. Majority of it can be seen in big cities and populated places. At the same time, many Filipinos both young and old are attracted to work and be an ESL teachers for them. My personal experience tells me that this kind of job is fun, demanding, frustrating, and disappointing.  However, as I mingle with them, I started to appreciate and understand my Korean students.
So what are the 7 things you must know before you work in a Korean language center? Below are the straightforward and honest answers I gathered from ESL teachers including myself.
1. Every Korean language schools has their own way of learning and teaching English. Three years ago, I worked in two tutorial centers in Paseo Sta.Rosa.Laguna. The tutorial center in the morning was composed of a group of students from Brentville and La Salle, while my afternoon job in another school was to teach a group of university students. These two language centers have their own style of teaching to their students. One time, the employer called me in his office and I was told like this, “Teacher Alfred, you should follow ______ tutorial center teaching method. You should not use your own style. I want you to always speak in the classroom, and my student only listen.” Then I asked why, he replied by saying, “because I want my students to be no 1.” At first, I couldn’t understand. But I realized that its their way of making a trademark for their school. They want to show the other Koreans that their tutorial center is the best, their students are the best, their teachers are the best, their books are the best (even it is just photocopied from other resources). Like what I said, it is a business, and business means competition.
2. Majority of Korean tutorial centers have training for new teachers during the first week of the job, and sometimes for a whole month. And the sad fact is this – some of them will give you half of the payment for that day, or only allowance for transportation and food. Does it sounds unfair? Yes it is. But that is the reality. What’s the purpose of the training? This is to let the new teachers familiarized themselves about the school, classroom daily routine, and maybe your employer wants to see if you are really serious in teaching Korean students.
3. Do not expect to receive benefits like SSS, Philhealth, Pagibig, allowances, bonuses from your employer unless there is an agreement between you and your Korean employer.  Despite they are legal to operate as a tutorial center, most of these schools do not give benefits to their teachers.  Every teachers that I encountered have past bad experiences with their employers, while others do not have.  These are the following reasons why your Korean employer does not care about your benefits:
  • Your Korean employer does not know about it.
  • Your Korean employer knows, but he does not know how to process it.
  • Your Korean employer knows it, but he does not want you to pay.
  • You are working as a part-time or a freelance teacher.
The main point is here, before you accept the job that was offered to you, make it sure that you have a clear understanding between you and your Korean employer. This is to avoid future problems like filing legal actions to your employer, or a verbal dispute that will lead to heated arguments.
3. Not all tutorial centers have a venue for formal English classes. Do not be surprised if you will teach in their house. This is what they always do. They just rent a big house and use it not only as a home for Korean students, but also a school too. They do this to cut their expenses.
4. Your Korean employer will ask you to teach during holidays. Philippine holidays are not a big deal to them. Their only concern is the ESL class of the students. So expect that you will work on holiday, but you can ask your employer to pay you twice by explaining to him that the law requires it.
How about Korean students? What will you do if you will encounter these situations on the first day of your teaching job?
5. Korean students always say that their country is the best among the rest. Last time I had discussion with my Korean students about the biggest mall in Philippines. I was telling them that Mall of Asia is the biggest in Philippines. Then one student interrupted me while I was talking and said, “No teacher, you are wrong. Our mall in Seoul is the biggest in the world.” If you will encounter this kind of situation, just ignore it. Do not get irritated if they will say that Samsung is the best brand or Gang Nam style is the best dance in the world. Korean students do this because they are proud of their heritage and their country. However, there are situations that you must explain or reprove them like what I did to one of my students. One of my students in grammar was telling his classmates that Filipinos are not good in English. I just smiled and asked him, “Why are you here in Philippines?, then everybody laughed. If you will encounter this kind of situation, do not get mad. Reprove the student in a loving way. You will earn respect from your students.
6. Korean students are always tired and sleepy. Do not fret if your students feel this way. You need to understand them that English is not the only subject they study. They have Math in English, Science in English, Filipino in English, etc. If your students feel sleepy during class time, then think of a class activity that will make them active and alive.
7. Korean students will always complain that English is too hard for them. If your student will complain about this, then you must do something as a teacher. It does not mean that they do not like English, they just have problems understanding it. Remember that English is not their second language. Be patient with them. Do everything that you can help them to appreciate English. Maybe something is wrong with the way you teach English. If there is, then change it or improve. There are hundreds of ways to do itSmile
I hope you find this article helpful. If you are planning to work as an ESL teacher to Koreans, then this article will be helpful to you.

7 Factors That Helped My Wife Passed the Licensure Exam for Teachers

I passed the examI was very happy this morning when I saw the name of my wife listed in the successful examinees of LET last September 2012. All I could say is THANK YOU LORD. She deserves it, and I am very proud of her.
I will say that there were 7 factors that helped my wife passed the test. Let me share it to you.
First, my wife prepared for the test. While we were still in Guam-Micronesia, she mentioned to me that she wants to take the test. Even though we were not yet in Philippines, she was busy preparing everything. She downloaded LET reviewers from the internet, she checked and listed down the requirements that were needed before and during the exam, and she asked my helped to scan and photocopied some documents for PRC Registration. When we arrived here, we also planned a lot of things too. She listed down the things that she will need before and during the test. Those were busy days for her, but it really helped her.
Second,my wife read a lot of books and magazines. When we moved here in Philippines, one of the things that she included in her luggage were books- literature books, grammar books, and vocabulary books. She also downloaded eBooks from the internet. Even some of the books were old, she doesn’t care.As long she can get information and refresh her knowledge, she reads it.
Third, my wife listened to some radio programs and took note of important information about the latest headlines, current events, etc. Every time I arrive from work, she always shared to me the latest headline of the day,and until now, she does it. She has also a notebook full of information, and uses it for note taking. She writes down practical information about relationship, human rights, and education. According to her, most of the questions in the Licensure Examination were practical questions. And she did not regret of spending time listening to radio programs, because it helped her.
Fourth, my wife chose and cooked what food to eat. During the last two months before the examination, my wife always cooked delicious and nutritious vegetables. I think choosing the right food also helped her passed the test. (I do not know if you will agree with me). She always served green leafy vegetables, beans, and food for the brain like peanuts. I remember the story of Daniel and his three friends. They chose to eat vegetables and fruits than to eat foods that was served on the kings table. The result- they were 10 times wiser among the scholars of Babylon.Smile
Fifth, my wife reviewed her college notes and lessons on her free time,or before going to bed.  After she left Mountain View College, she carried with her the photocopied syllabuses and college notes. She takes time to read it during her free time or before going to bed at night. She also asked my help by asking her questions that she just read. She did not go to any review centers. She just reviewed by  herself. How about review centers? Review centers can also help you, but it will not be a guarantee that you will pass the test. It still depends on you if you will take your review seriously and focus on it.
Sixth, I supported my wife.SmileA person cannot be successful in life if no one will support him/her. This is what I did to my wife. I gave my full support to her before and during the exam. There are lot of ways to support someone. It can be emotionally, financially, physically, and spiritually. Even simple good things that you will do to her will encourage her to pursue and succeed in life.
Seventh,we always include in our prayers her upcoming LET examination, and trusting God that He will be with her during the exam. My wife and I are Christians. We believe in the promise of the Bible that says,“Ask and it shall be given unto you.”I also included her in my personal prayers when I wake-up at midnight, or before I leave the bed every morning because I believe in the power of prayer.
In a few months, she will take an oath as a professional and licensed teacher. I wish her luck in her teaching career. For those who were not able to passed the last teacher’s exam, do not give up. There is hope in everythingSmile

7 Reasons Why Filipinos Are Always Poor

why i am always poorI was reading a financial book written by Dr. Francisco Colayco last night. The title of the book is “Wealth Within Your Reach, Pera Mo, Palaguin Mo.” It is an eye opener and very informative book. One of the topics that caught my attention is “Your Obstacles To Financial Freedom”. The author layout the seven fundamental obstacles in achieving financial independence, and he provide solutions too. Let me share what he had written. I will quote him, and at the same time I will give my personal opinion.
1. Procastination.
Filipinos are known procastinators. We have this manyana habit of putting off tomorrow what we can accomplish today. Do not procastinate. It will cost you dearly.
One example of  is saving money in investments like government bonds that offer high yielding interest. If you started saving money while you are still young, then for sure you will not have financial problems when you reach your retirement age.
2. Inflation.
The economic condition of sustained price increases. Money is an asset that continuously loses value. When prices of commodities go up, the value of the money decreases. In order to maintain or improve your personal wealth, you must find a way to beat inflation.
When I was a kid, I still remember that I can buy a candy that cost 25 cents. But this time, you cannot find a candy that cost 25 cents. Dr. Colayco estimated that inflation rate is increasing 4% every year. He also suggested the following solutions:
We must make sure that our incomes and our savings and investments must grow by at least 4% or better...It is therefore, not enough to just save. Where you put your savings will determine whether your earnings rate will beat inflation...As a rule, you should target an earnings rate, that is 4% higher than inflation.
3. Unreasonable Demands of Family and Friends.
Oftentimes, family and friends expect support to the point of unreasonableness...It is so familiar a picture in barangays all over the country where the family members of OFW spend their time doing nothing while waiting for the remittance of the OFW. Come remittance day, the barangay goes into mode. The money that was sent for education or for investment in a business is diverted to unnecessary recreation, drinking session, gambling and good time.
The above example happens to any Filipinos who work abroad. He suggested that there are ways to combat this problem:
  • Be honest with your family members. Tell them that your hard earned money is not to be used in unnecessary things.
  • If you are sending money for tuition fees, then it is better to send it directly to the school. This is to avoid of spending the money.
  • Save money for yourself. Do not send all your money to your family.
4. Yourself.
Negative values can hinder us from achieving financial independence...Our fear of failure, laziness, negativism, bad spending habits, lack of emotional and financial intelligence can keep us from succeeding in life...Don’t be a loser. Be guided by winners. As they say: Losers criticize. Winners analyze.
Last week, one of the hottest news in our country is “investment scam” that happened in Pagadian. For those who were scammed, that experience is very painful. But “painful is a very powerful motivator tool to move you into action.
Walang nagtatagumpay na hindi dumadaan sa pagkabigo.
If you experienced of being fooled by investment scammers, or your business went down, do not give up. Learn from your mistakes, and move on.
5. Laziness.
Many of us have developed the habit of too much dependence on others. This has led to indolence and sheer laziness...This war for financial independence is a personal war.It has to be fought individually. We cannot let somebody else fight it for us.
His statement is really true. There are many instances that we always depends on someone else like our parents, siblings, relatives, etc. If you have the strength to work and the capability to earn money, then do not depend on others.
6. Poor spending habits.
There are two major reasons for this behavior:
Impulse buying. People, especially those who do “malling” for leisure, almost always end up buying more than what they intended to do.
Spending because of trends. So many of our young employees, agents and professionals spend their hard-earned salaries and commissions on truly unnecessary items.
Your spending habit is the final determinant of your financial success. What really count is not so much what you earn but what you get to keep.
To solve this problem and to control it is to list down all the things you need. Do not waste your money on things that you want. Live within your means.
7. Lack of Financial Literacy.
Financial literacy is all about common sense. It is knowing what real wealth means and what money is for...People must realize that this does not require formal college degrees.
So how can you become financial literate? There are lots of ways. Below are one of the things we can:
  • Attend a seminar on how to be financial independent.
  • Read books and magazines. There are lots of books that you can buy in National bookstore. Some of the books that I can recommend are written by our local writers like Dr. Francisco Colayco,Chinky Tan, etc. Magazines like entreprenuer magazines, Pinoy Business magazines, etc.
  • Listen to radio program. I highly recommend that you listen to Chinkpositive by Chinky Tan every Sunday (6 am – 8 am) on RadyoBalita News FM.
  • etc.
I hope this article gives you enlightenment on how to be financially independent. I know that there are lots of obstacles, but you can do it. Last words from Dr. Colayco
Do not delay. Take appropriate action right away. Be a winner. Be positive in all that you do. Do not be afraid to fail. Failure is an integral part of success.

Does a child has the right to choose for his/her future career

what career shold i chooseWhile I was checking my old files in my locker, I saw the speech of my student and started to read it. The speech was simple but it was full of information. Then I remember the time when I was going to enroll in the university. ( I was 16 years old that time. Still young and full of dreams.)I do not know what major should I take even I already have plans in my mind. That time, I was  planning to take Political Science then I will proceed to Law School. That was my plan. However, it changed when my father told me to enter the seminary in Cavite. At first, I was hesitant because I do not want to be a theologian. But at the end, my father was able to convinced me to enter the seminary. If you will asked me what is my profession now, I will tell you that I did not become a pastor or a priest. I am a full-pledged school teacher. I became a teacher after I graduated from the university, and this is my 11th year in this profession. I enjoy my work and I love it.

This scenario always happen between the parent and the child, and this is common in our country. But the question is this, “Does a child has the right to choose for his/her future career? Let me share the speech of my student. This is worth reading even it was addressed to her classmates.

Hello to everyone. Did you decide for your future career? Now you are a student, but someday you will choose a career, right? Also, your parents will be concern about your career, too. However, many parents force their grown-up teenager to decide for a career that they want, instead of giving advice to their children. The roles of the parents are important for their children. However, parents should know what their children want to be in the future, and they should support and encourage their children.

All parents love their son and daughter so much, so they want their children to be successful persons, and to live a happy life. Therefore, parents tend to expect their children to be a doctor, a nurse, or a lawyer. However, if the children will choose what their parents want, then there is a possibility that they will not be happy and cannot be a successful person. Even though they succeed, it will not continue forever. Do you know why? If a person cannot do what he wants, then he does not have enthusiasm to do his work effectively, and cannot enjoy what he is doing. As a result, that person will live unhappily and will not be successful. In short, parents can ruin their children life instead of improving them. The meaning of choosing a career is to decide how to live your life. It means that a chosen career has many effects to a person’s life, so children have to choose by themselves.

The reason why parents choose for themselves is that they want their dreams to be fulfilled through their kids. Many parents became frustrated because when they were still a kid, they were not able to do it, so they are forcing their children to do it for them. Even though they have reasons, they cannot force their children to do it. Parents also argue that they raised their children, so they have the right to choose for their children. However, both reasons are not acceptable. Once a child became 18 or 19, he or she is dependent and can have an own life.

Parents know what are the aptitude, interest, intelligence, and personality of their kid very well. They raised their children for many years. When parents and a child discuss about choosing a career, they must consider their child’s opinion too. However, parents sometimes do not consider it. A grown up teenager knows better than his parents when it comes to his interest, aptitude, intelligence, and personality. He cannot tell everything to his parents like a young child. He has his own idea for his future. He keeps on finding what he likes to do, and what skills he wants to improve. Therefore, parents should consider a child’s opinion.

I therefore conclude, a career of a person plays a large role in his happiness. Let the grown-up teenager choose a career which he / she wants based on his / her interests, aptitude, intelligence, and personality. Teenagers sometimes think differently and illogically, so they need their parents’ advice and guidance.

This is __________ from level 6. I hope your mind is clear with this issue. Thank you for listening and have a nice day.

What are the requirements to be a professional teacher in public or private school in Philippines?

a filipino teacher teaching in elementary school

Due to recent changes in the educational system of our country, the Department of Education is expecting more teachers to work in public and private school starting next school year of 2013.

This is a good news and a great opportunity for those who want to become a teacher. I have been teaching for a decade, and I can honestly say that this profession will always be in demand, and will never cease.

If you are planning to be a school teacher in our country then you must have the following requirements:

First, you must be a graduate of Education in Elementary or Secondary, or you must be a Bachelor Degree plus a Certificate in Teaching Profession to be able to teach in secondary level

In some places, a CTP is not that important, only a Bachelor degree matters. (The reason why some schools accepts non-Education major without CTP is because of the lack of teachers in that area.)

However, having CTP for non-Education majors will give advantage and will make you eligible to take the Licensure Exam for Teachers.

Second, you must passed LET to be a certified and licensed teacher

A teacher that has a license has advantages compare to non-license teachers. Below are the following:
  • A license teacher receives more salary.
  • A licensed teacher easily gets a job.
  • A licensed teacher becomes a regular worker in his/her school.
  • A licensed teacher receives more benefits especially in government schools.
  • A licensed teacher easily gets hired if planning to work and teach abroad.
What if you do not have Certificate in Teaching Profession?

The best thing to do is to enroll in a university or college that offers the 21 units in Education (Certificate in Teaching Profession) prescribed by PRC

I know it is time consuming, and not ideal for those who are working full time. However, there are ways to do it.

  • You can study during the weekend
  • You can study online (This is what I highly recommend).
  • You can visit a university and speak to the Dean of the College of Education of the university, and ask him/her if you can do self study through modules.

If you are planning to take a CTP online, then I recommend the following open university in our country:
Those universities are highly recommend by many students. However, if you are not used in an online learning, then enroll in a traditional university that I've mentioned above.

4 Things that you must know before you work as an OFW

working abroad

A recruitment agency from Manila phoned me last night. I was asked if I am interested to work in an International School in Riyadh,Saudi Arabia.

So I asked the lady caller how did she get my information. She told me that she have seen my resume in workabroad.ph

I was told everything about the job offered in KSA, and I was asked to visit their office in Ermita, Manila today at 3 pm because the employer wants to see me personally.

Unfortunately, I declined the offer due to my work commitment. I also made a promise to my wife that I will be on her side when she gives birth to our baby this coming March.Smile

While I was lying in my bed last night, I kept on thinking about our conversation on the phone. What if the job is not real? What if the recruiting agency is not a licensed agency?

So this morning, when I arrived in my workplace, the first thing I did is to check the agency’s profile in Workabroad and POEA.

I found out that they have a valid license and they are authorize by POEA to operate as a recruiting agency.

This is a good sign that the agency is real and recognize by our government.

However, it does not mean that you will just ‘dive in’ and grab the opportunity abroad.

This is what always happen to most Filipinos who wants to work abroad. Once they accepted the job, and started working in a foreign company, then problems will come out.

Before you finally accept the job offered abroad by a recruitment agency, you must consider the following things:

1. Contract. What is a contract?
“A contract is a binding agreement between two or more persons that is enforceable by law.” –Word Web Dictionary
You will read on your contract about your salary, job description, allowances, company’s policies, etc. Before you sign a contract, you must understand everything. If something is not clear, then ask question. Also, keep a copy of your contract for yourself.

2. Salary. Most agencies have a set of salary for a certain job. However, it is not yet final. You can still negotiate with the recruiting agency, if you feel that it is not enough.

You must also remember that your salary will be based on your qualification, skills, degree earned, work experiences, etc.

If you think you did not meet the company’s salary scale, then do not expect a lot.

If you are uncertain about your salary, you can contact POEA in this number.

How about overtime jobs? A good company will pay a worker who will still work after regular working hours. But you must follow the company’s policy about overtime job.

3. Benefits. An OFW is entitled to receive benefits while working abroad.

Does the company offers housing allowance? How about bonuses, health and accident insurance?

Your recruiting agency must also process your POEA / OWWA membership.

Your membership will cover your SSS, Philhealth.

Being a member will also help you once you encounter a problem abroad. It is also beneficial to your dependents.

4. Working Condition. Before you leave our country, you must know what will be your working condition.

This is very important so you will not be surprised once you arrived in the country of your destination.

Some agencies provide seminars about the country’s culture, do’s and don'ts, basic information, etc. If there will be no seminar, then you can do it by yourself. You can search the internet or read books. This will give you idea of the country you will be working.

To work abroad is not easy as what you think. So before you work in other country, always remember that you have the right to know everything about your job.

imagePhilippines is becoming the center of destination for many Koreans. They come here to do business, to travel, to retire, and to study. If you will look around, you will find many Korean establishments and majority of these are English language center for Koreans. • If you are planning to become a stay-in tutor, make everything clear with your Korean employer. Ask questions, and if possible find out first from other former tutors what is the condition of the job.
C. ESL Teacher in a Korean School or Language Center. This is the last type of job that you can do if you want to become an English tutor to Koreans. Many schools and language centers can be seen in big urban places. If you want a formal teaching or class-based setting, then this is for you. Below are the details:

  • Most of the school and language centers pay a minimal salary of 10,000. You will receive more if you have TESOL certificate, teaching license, and experience.

Reasons Why Many Filipinos are Scammed by ‘Get Rich Quick’ Investments, And How To Avoid it.

image

Since last week, the issued about the Aman Futures Group Scam is still in the hot seat of all Philippine news, blogs, social networks, and concerned Filipino citizens.

This early morning, I was listening to Radyo Balita News 5, and it seems that NBI is now getting into the scene.

They are trying to find out who are the perpetrators of this investment scam owned by Manuel Amalilio, who was reportedly fled to Malaysia. You can read the whole details of the new here – Aman Futures Group Scam.

So the question is this – ‘why is it that many Filipinos are still getting scammed by these kind of groups’?

I am not only talking about investment scams, but pyramid networking scams, travel club membership scams, etc.

The first reason is ignorance.  We have a Filipino proverb that says, “Walang manloloko kung walang magpapaloko.

Scammers are always looking for people that can be easily convinced by means of glossy and beautiful brochures, testimonies of past customers, endorsement of prominent people, friends, relatives, and even seminars.

They are also blinded by the ‘get rich quick investments.’ However, ignorant is not an excuse, we humans should use our common sense and our thinking before we give our money to these scammers, or before we join any kind of investments.

The second reason is greed. I do not know if this reason will be acceptable to my readers, but as far I see, greed is one of the main reason why many are getting scammed.

So what is greed? It is an excessive desire to possess more.

We humans have the tendency to desire something more. However, this is not good. Greediness will cloud your judgment and reasoning, same with investment scams.

When I was in college, I have a friend who had plenty of money. He earned it by selling food products to the students and it was very profitable.

Then he joined a networking group who promised him that he can earn a big interest of money if he will invest it in the company. At first, it was good, pero habang tumatagal ay umuunti ang kanyang nakukuhang interest.

Hanggang nawalang parang bula ang kumpanya. Nang magkita kami, I asked him why did he joined. He told me that he really wants to earn lots of money. But because his judgment was clouded, he did not study it first and check the company’s credential.

Ang tangi lang nyang iniisip ay ang pagpapadami nang pera. At the end, he regretted what he did.

The third reason and the last is poverty. It is sad to say that many Filipinos are in poverty line, and this problem is always used by scammers to fool many Filipinos.

I remember the story of my wife. She told me that there is a group of people in Palawan claiming that they are connected to the late President of the Philippines and his family.

They used the name of this family to convinced people to join them. They also said that once you join their group, you will be given a share of the family’s wealth like gold, diamonds, treasures, and many benefits too.

But before you can avail this, you need to be a member by paying a monthly membership, and do community services like planting trees etc. Ang masama pa, ang itatanim mo na mga puno ay kailangan mong bilhin sa kanila.

These poor people do not have any ideas that they are just being fooled. Blinded by the company’s promises and scam practices, their hard-earned money goes to nothing.

So how can we avoid this investment scam groups, pyramid networking scam, etc.?
  1. Avoid seminars that make claims that you’ll get rich in a short time. This is what happened to those who invested in Aman Futures Group. They were told that the money they will invest will offer a high return or it will be doubled. This is not a genuine investment.
  2. Avoid people or company who pressures you into investing and borrowing money.
  3. Do not believe the idea that the more you invest money, the high the return is.
  4. Do not easily believe by their glossy brochures, free seminars, even endorsements of prominent people.
  5. If you are unsure of their existence and legality, consult your local government of Department of Trade and Industry.
  6. Avoid a company that says that financial success is easy and not risky. To become a wealthy person involve planning and hard work.
  7. Do not believed companies that promotes unsolicited emails, surprise phone calls especially those who are based abroad.
I hope that this short article will give tips and insights about these scammers. If someone will come and approach you, just think of the 7 ways to avoid them. If not, you will regret it forever.

The number you dialed is not available, please try your call later.” Will you be happy or get irritated? Remember that you are not the only applicant who is applying for the job. There are more applicants waiting to be called. So before you pass your resume, make it sure that the number you included is correct. Also, do not turn off your mobile phone. Charge the battery if you see that it is almost drained. You do not know when will they call you. Always be prepared.
2. Unnecessary information in your resume. Before you give your resume, make it sure that all the important information is there. However, do not include unnecessary information that is not related to the job that you are applying. Employers do not have the time to read everything. A good resume has only 2 pages.
3. Unprofessional email address. Avoid an email address that looks like this: crazygirllover@yahoo.com. This kind of email address is unprofessional. It is advisable to create an email add that has your name and not too long.
4. Lacked of self confidence. Showing a lacked of self-confident during the interview is usually the reason why many applicants were rejected. Your poise, appearance, the way you talked is very important. The next time you have an interview,be confident of yourself.
5. Could not understand what you are saying. Always pronounce the words properly. Do not eat the words while you are talking. It is very irritating to an interviewer if he will not understand what you are saying.
6. Spoke badly about the past employers. Do not do this in front of your interviewer. He will also think that you will do it if you will leave his company.
7. Late for interview. To be late on your scheduled interview is unacceptable. Come on time or 30 minutes before the interview.
8. Weak handshake. Don’t you know that a weak handshake shows a weak personality and a lack of self confidence? So the next time you give a handshake, make it firm and smile.
9. No manners. When you are in front of your job interviewer, do not:
  • chew bubble gum
  • bite your fingernails
  • cross your legs when you sit down
  • talk loud
  • clean your ear and nose using your finger.
  • etc.
10. Overaggressive and over self-confident. If you are a person who thinks that you are the best especially to your interviewer, then this is a way that you will not get hired. Do not boast of yourself. Be humble.
The next time you will have an interview, please do not forget these 10 things before, during, and after the interview. Good luckSmile

How can I make a good letter of application?

imageMany job recruiters requests a letter of application along with a resume. This is a formal way of applying to a job, because employers usually read the application letter before checking the resume. It also signifies your intent that you are serious of applying to the job. So how will you write a good letter of application? A good letter of application includes the following:

  1. Date
  2. Name, title, company address
  3. Salutation
  4. Main body of the letter
  5. Closing
  6. Signature over printed name

You must always remember that the body of your letter must be worth reading. Avoid a long and wordy words. Make it direct to the point. You must also keep in mind the following things, when you write the letter:

  • Describe what you can offer to them. Include your skills and how can you will be an asset to the company. This will give a plus factor for your application.
  • Write a dynamic introduction, Instead of writing this…”I would like to apply for…”, then write this, “I read with interest the advertisement of your company about..”
  • Do not include the phrase “Christian Greetings!” after the salutation. It sounds very religious unless you will apply in a religious institution.
  • Make your body to two or three paragraph. Just make it direct to the point. Avoid redundancy and wordy letters.
  • Do not copy someone's application letter. I’ve read many application letters that were just copied from someone’s work. It is alright to use it as a guide but to copy the words is not justifiable.

3 things that you must know before accepting a job in any Philippine recruitment agencies?

imageRecruitment agency is one of the best ways to get a job. There are two types of recruitment agencies in Philippines. The first type of agency is pad by a certain company to find people to hire. The second type of agency will look for companies that matches the jobseekers qualification, then after he/she is hired, the applicant will pay a certain fee for their service.

But before you use their services, you must know 3 things about Philippine recruitment agencies. Let me share this to you.

1. Avoid any recruitment agencies that charge high service fee. Many victims of this kind of agencies are usually Overseas Filipino Workers. One time, an employment agency from Manila phoned me. The woman on the phone told me that the employer saw my resume in workabroad.ph, and I am qualified to be a part of the school’s working team. However, I need to pay almost 80,000 pesos to be accepted. She explained that it covers the processing fee, the dental and medical fees, and the place ticket fee. When I did the calculation by myself, I found out that it will only cost the half amount of fees mentioned by the woman on the phone. I know that it is a good job, but the recruitment agency was charging me a very high fee that will make me financially crippled.

2. Check the recruitment agency’s background before you accept the job offered. Hundreds of recruitment agencies are everywhere in our country. This is a good opportunity to get a job. But before you use their service, make it sure that they are legal recruiters. Many Filipinos were scammed by illegal recruiters, and most of their victims came from provinces. Their style is this: they will ask you to pay an upfront fee to process your application, and once they have the money, they will disappear and will not show up anymore. A good and legal recruitment agency practices ethical working standards. It is also registered in the Department of Trade and Industry or Philippine Overseas Employment. Their license are not expired, and they have a valid phone number and office. Do not deal with recruiters who communicates with you through phone or email. If you are unsure of their existence, you can check them in DTI local agencies, and POEA for overseas agencies.

3. Make a good presentation and be prepared always. If you are called for an interview then make it sure that you will prepare everything including yourself. These are the common things that you must:

  • A professional resume. Some recruitment agencies will also require you to fill up a bio data. It can be available in their office for free or you must pay for it.
  • ID pictures. Most required pictures are 2x2 passport size. Some agencies will ask for a whole body picture of yours with a white background.
  • Pencil, pen, glue
  • Original and photocopy of Transcript of Records, Diplomas, and Certificates.
  • NBI Clearance
  • Police Clearance
  • Medical Certificate. Most agencies are affiliated with a certain hospital or clinic. Even you bring a medical certificate, it will not be honored unless it came from a clinic or hospital recognized by them.
  • Supporting documents like recommendation letter, barangay clearance, sedula, NSO birth certificate, marriage certificate for woman.
  • Valid ID’s like SSS, Philippine passport, drivers license, etc.
  • extra money

What are the 5 characteristics of a good company in Philippines?

imageIn Philippines, many companies can be seen everywhere. This is a good sign that our country is economically progressing, and people are getting jobs.

But it makes me sad to hear news of some companies who take advantage of their employees. I

f you want to have a long term or lifetime career, then you must work or find a good company that takes care of the employees welfare.

So what are the qualities of a good company? Let me list down the following qualities of a good company:

First, its employees are proud to be a part of the company

There is always a smile on their face every time they are asked about their company.

Second. they reward employees not only for their good performance, but also their loyalty to the company.

I think this only rare, because of the switching of jobs nowadays. But it is still worth looking to have a company where you can stay for a long time.

Third, they have company rules and regulations to protect the employees, and to promote employees’ productivity.

A company that does not have rules and regulation must be avoided.

In our country, there are many workers that are abused and taken advantage by their employers by giving their employees low salaries,no overtime payment, no benefits, etc.

This kind of company must be avoided.

Fourth, a good company gives good compensation packages and incentives to their employees. Our government mandates that a company must provide benefits to its employees. Some of the benefits are 13th month pay, Philhealth, SSS, Pagibig etc.

They listen to their employees feelings and sentiments. A good company give their employees a chance to express themselves about the company’s policies, or some other concerns that can affect the work of every employees. A bad company does not listen and is totally totalitarian by dictating orders to their employees.
So what do you think? Does your company has the qualities of being a good company that I have just mentioned above. If not, think twice so you will not regret it.

5 things you must consider before you join Multi Level Marketing or Networking

We, Filipinos are known for being “madiskarte” when it comes to earning money, and we will do everything just to earn money by joining any business opportunities. Nowadays, many Filipinos ventured the world of Multi Level Marketing or Networking. For the past years, we heard and seen many MLM companies sprang up in Philippines. It had been said that this is the fastest way to have a job, and to get rich.

But the big question for those who are planning to join MLM is this,”Is Multi Level Marketing for you?” Majorities of MLM companies in the Philippines recruit persons to join the sales network, and in return, you will earn points that will be turn into cash. You will also be required to pay an initial fee so you can sell the company's’ products. You must also recruit members because it is the “butter and cream” of your income. If you are planning to join any MLM companies, then you must consider the following things: the product, the company itself, the people who joined, the compensation plan, and the benefits.
  1. The product. What is the quality of the company’s product? You cannot sell effectively to your customers if the products are not of good quality.
  2. The company. Is the company been operating for a long time? Is it a stable company?
  3. The people. You must ask and interview those who have been selling their products successfully, and those who failed. This will give you a balanced evaluation of their marketing strategies.
  4. The compensation plan. MLM business requires a person who can communicate, can convince customers to buy the products,a person who can work hard to meet monthly goals, and enjoys recruiting new members. If you do not have these qualities, then you cannot earn a good compensation from the company.
  5. The benefits. Will you get benefits if you will join the company. Do they provide training and seminars? Do they give incentives and gifts.
If you feel that MLM is for you, then join it. But if you do not feel that it is for you, then you must not. Many people who joined MLM were pushed by their relatives and friends, attracted by the company’s advertisements, and quick to get rich ideas. So before you join any MLM companies, think and evaluate first so you will not regret it.

5 things you should avoid in writing a resume?

One of the main reasons why many job applicants do not get hired is because their resumes fail to attract the employers interest. Also, the resume does not meet the expectation of the interviewer.

So what are the things that you should avoid so you will not end up being rejected? Here are the following:

1. Typographical errors – your resume should be error free. Avoid misspelling and grammatical mistakes. Check every thing before you print out your resume. Make it sure that the words are type correctly.

2. Unnecessary and unclear information – resume readers have only few minutes to read your resume. So avoid unnecessary information if possible. We Filipinos are still using the traditional way of writing a resume that looks like a bio-data. However, most employees are not interested about our hobbies, interest, father’s or mother’s name, etc. What they want to see are important information of your skill, education, and work experience. Also, avoid vague information. It will only confuse the interviewer.

3. False information – never include false information of yourself in the resume. It is dishonesty, and it will ruin your credibility. There are some job applicants who do this by securing fake diplomas and transcript of records to get a job. At present, many companies in our country are using private investigators to check the applicants background and true identity once they found suspicious on the applicants resume. Simple rule still applies,”Honesty is the best policy.” Even you are undergraduate, there are still many employers that are willing to hire you, so be honest of yourself.

4. Exaggeration – Do not pretend to be more than who you really are. Also, do not emphasize too much of yourself. It will a bad impression to your interviewer.

5. Too much words – Avoid too wordy of your experience. Simplicity is still the best.

How will you handle yourself before and during the interview?

how to pass the interviewDo you know that a job interview is your ultimate test? This is where the employer will decide whether you should be hired or not. During the interview, it is your opportunity to show your interviewer that you are the person they have been looking for. So how will you handle yourself during the interview? Let me list down the things that you need to do before and during the interview.

1. Greet the interviewer with a friendly smile and a firm handshake. It will set the mood right away.

2.Maintain eye to eye contact when you speak, and when you listen to the interviewer’s questions. This shows that you are interested and respectful.

3. Sit properly on your seat. Do not slouch, but sit halfway through your seat, with your body leaning towards the interviewer. Do not cross your arm and cross your leg.

4. If you do not understand the question of your interviewer, politely tell the interviewer that you did not understand the question. Then ask him if he can repeat the question again.

5. Keep your answer straight to the point or direct. Only give answers based on the questions that is asked by the interviewer.

6. Show to the interviewer that you are a dependable person and you are willing to work hard.

7. If the interviewer will ask, “Why did you leave your previous work?”, then answer without being negative. You can answer like this, “My previous company was good, but I wanted something better and more challenging.”
